Don’t Ever Ask THIS Person to Film Your Wedding Video

I’m asked all the time, “who do I ask to film my wedding?” Or, more specifically in the case of Storymix, “who should hold the cameras?” As you could see from the video tutorial, most guests will be filming anyway, so finding SOMEONE… anyone… isn’t a problem. But who should you NOT ask?

Well, I asked my sister, a seasoned filmmaker. Love her and glad she got video… but… bad idea. She was very used to directing actors. Check out this clip from our first dance.

Theoretically, most people will know not to interrupt your first dance. As you can see, we were kind of in our own little world, so the dancing continued.

Little caveat, I’m not saying not to hire a seasoned videographer or cinematographer who films weddings. They know how to stay in the background. :)

Little caveat #2, after years of crying that I had no video from my choreographed first dance, I’m incredibly grateful to have found any video at all. Don’t want to sound like a brat. Oops. Too late. :)

Don’t Do THIS to Your Wedding Party or Coordinator!

I get asked all the time about how to coordinate the cameras and filming for a WeddingMix event. Scratch that. That’s NOT the question I get asked. That’s the question that SHOULD be asked. People ask me if asking their friends to film their wedding video is putting them to work. Easy answer. No. Most of your friends have their cameras and iPhones out anyway.

BUT here’s what you DON’T want to do

Your box of cameras arrives from Storymix a few days before the wedding. The night before the wedding, you surprise your wedding party with the fact that they need to “get video of your wedding”. Or, the morning of the wedding, you “instruct” your wedding coordinator that you ordered this great wedding video service and she needs to “make sure the guests get video”.

That is what’s called being a bit of a bridezilla. It’s not fair to spring this on them. Getting candid video of your wedding is fun, but does require literally just a few minutes of planning.

WeddingMix is NOT the same as disposable cameras

Leaving a disposable camera on the table is leaving it to chance that someone will pick it up and take photos. And hopefully that someone will not be (a) 10 years old or (b) so drunk they can’t stand up.

As I said, getting wedding video clips needs a few minutes of planning. Literally… a few minutes.

Just a Minute of Planning

We ship the cameras with big postcards full of  tips on getting good video, who to ask to hold the cameras, questions to ask wedding guests…  You want to give your friends a minute to look these over and get excited about all the cool moments they can get on video. You also want to make sure they know which moments you’d like to get on video.

We make this pretty easy with the iPhone app – there’s a shot list built right in. And, I got a great tip from one of our fabulous bride guest bloggers – Kelsey. Her mom bought a 5 camera package as a gift for her. She asked a few different people a few days ahead of time to capture different aspects of the wedding. Her mom wrote little note cards with what they were hoping to capture and tied them to the individual cameras.

While you don’t have to tie note cards to cameras, simply asking a few trustworthy friends and family members (or at least asking your wedding coordinator to do so) a few days ahead of time, will save you having to think about it on your wedding day. And it will certainly let them have fun planning the moments they will capture… like the flash mob dance, or the pre-wedding golf trip, or the post-wedding after party craziness, or the “impromptu” re-enactment of the cop pulling you over during the road trip from spring break, or the… you get the picture. So what cool moments do you hope your friends will capture?

Hire A Cheap Wedding DJ And Lose Weight

Editor’s Note: Today we are joined by guest blogger, Brad Junell of Raleigh Event DJ.

3 Tips On How To Be A Penny Wise Bride and Not Pound Foolish

What’s the purpose of investing so much time, energy, money, and emotion into one special day . . . if it isn’t ”to throw the most incredibly fun party for your friends and family?”

“Survey Says…”

What your guests will remember about your wedding is: “the fun they had at your reception” – and that’s second only to food and drink.

The “noise” in today’s wedding market is so prolific that many brides take their eye off the “Prize,” that is, for everyone to have fun!

Consider that a wedding is nothing short of a well choreographed ballet requiring the skills, talent and expertise of project minded individuals – but not every bride is an experienced project manager. Now consider the choices coming at you, from all directions, all at once, and changing relentlessly. It’s no wonder some brides get anxious about “the budget.”

Don't pay your DJ less than a veggie trayBelieve me when I tell you: “I’ve seen the road to ‘happily ever after’ and it is strewn with tons of un-eaten broccoli and too many disappointed brides suffering buyer’s remorse.“

Being thrifty and having a “Vision” of a storybook wedding isn’t enough. But don’t worry; you don’t need a business degree to manage your wedding project. There are a few easy things you can do to make everything work to your advantage . . .

Tip 1

Put everything in perspective based on the impact and importance it has on the end-result. You want the biggest bang for your buck! Right? So, focus your resources on the things that contribute the greatest impact.

You may decide you want to include:

  • the veggie tray with ornately carved fruit creatures
  • the eccentric artisan cheese platter you provided during cocktail hour
  • the gracefully melting swan ice-sculpture..

Remember though, everyone is there to “Eat, Drink and be Merry” so those are the elements where your financial attention should be focused.

I’m not saying to omit ice sculptures or anything else – I’m just trying to help you keep it all in perspective.

Case in point: If you’ve ever watched 4 Weddings, you know that your DJ is worth more to the success of your wedding than raw broccoli or a block of frozen water that can’t even be added to a Rum & Coke.

When it comes to booking wedding vendors, the typical pecking order is: Church, Reception Venue, Photographer, Caterer, DJ/Band, Cake, Florist, Videographer, etc. Along the way, you are going to be challenged with numerous additional choices: Invitations, Dresses, Tuxedos, Honeymoon, Favors, Aisle Runners, Bridesmaid & Groomsmen Gifts, etc. It’s overwhelming and can quickly get out of control.

Hire A Cheap Wedding DJ and Lose Weight

To help you avoid getting to that point of sheer desperation, where you have an exhausted budget and seemingly never ending expenditures, and you’re resorting to typing “Cheap Wedding DJs” into Google, and now you’re losing weight from all the stress of worrying whether “Tom, Dick & Harry DJ” will even show up, let alone be any good . . .

Tip 2

Set reasonable budget expectations for those services you identified as having the greatest contribution to your wedding’s success. It’s all too easy to let minute details ambush and hijack your budget. Before you know it, all those little things quickly add up to hundreds of dollars.

Let me reiterate . . . no one’s saying forego signature details that personalize your wedding and reflect what’s unique about you. By prioritizing and allocating your budget to the “value-rich” services that ensure the WOW-Factor your guests are expecting, all those “details” that truly will enrich the whole experience will become obvious.

To help you set a realistic Wedding Budget check out: Cost of A Wedding. Not only can you get estimates for your overall wedding budget, but you can also refine them specifically to you local area, as well as focus in on individual vendor/service categories.

Keep in mind that “averages” are mathematical calculations that even out the highs and low for a series of numeric data and provide no insight to quality or value provided at that price.

Brides and grooms should always meet with prospective service providers and never select a service based on price alone – which leads me to my final point . . .

Raleigh Event DJ - Wedding DJ servicesTip 3

Don’t judge a book by its . . . price. Is “average” or “cheap” how you really want your wedding to appear? You deserve the best and you can have it too. You might be surprised what you really can afford when you begin by first focusing your budget’s attention on the things that genuinely make a difference.

You know better than anyone what you can afford and what you are willing to spend. But keep in mind that the old adages that have stood the test of time are often your best advice . . . “If it seems too good to be true then it probably is” and “You get what you pay for.”

A “Cheap DJ” is no bargain if no one has fun at your wedding.

When surveyed after their wedding, nearly 85% of brides wish they budgeted more for their DJ. Your DJ has a far greater impact on the success of your entire wedding celebration than to be simply thought of as someone who plays music for 3 or 4 hours.

The Myth of “Putting Your Guests to Work” | DIY Wedding Video

DIY Wedding Video can be so incredibly personal and so much fun… and yet… aren’t you putting your guests to work when you ask them to film your wedding video? Watch the video tutorial below to learn the truth behind the myth. As you watch, feel free to do a shot every time I say “um”, you’ll be pleasantly wasted by the end of 10 minutes!

The funny thing is that when we were featured on ABC evening news last spring, what do you think they called the feature? Putting Your Guests to Work!

Tell me something, when you go to weddings, do you ever see people taking photos and video? I thought so. Do you think anyone begged or paid them to do this? Nope. They just love taking video. What do they do with it? At best, they put it up on Facebook. The bride almost never gets a copy. Ugh, and what good is it to get an email with a video attachment? The video file is soooo tiny that you can’t do anything with it.

WeddingMix allows your friends who love taking video to actually contribute to your wedding video. They can use the app to take video with their iPhone and still post it to Facebook, but YOU get a copy of the HD version of the video files as well! Or, instead of using their own flip camera, they can use ours. After the wedding, you simply send the cameras back in the prepaid mailer. No need to try and get your friends to burn the video files to a disc and mail to you! And best of all, you get an edited wedding video in the end.

So, when should they take video? As soon as you place your order, you can send them a login code, to contribute clips to your wedding video right from their iPhone. Why would they do that? Well, what about getting video from your trip to try on dresses? Or the cake tasting? Or rehearsal dinner? If you’re really adventuresome, you can include clips from the bachelorette party.

Wait a minute! But aren’t I putting a lot of pressure on my friends to get the “perfect shot” and make sure they don’t miss anything? You want your guests to have fun. This is a party after all. If it’s that important to you that your video be absolutely perfect, then you should probably hire a videographer as well. We work with plenty of brides who have both a videographer and WeddingMix. This will give you the peace of mind of knowing that you can actually hear all your vows. And your guests can concentrate on the fun stuff, like telling embarrassing stories about you for your wedding video. :)

How will my friends know what to video? We ship a card with video tips and a list of fun interview questions with every camera order. If you simply can’t wait, you can download the tips using the link on the upper right of this page.

How to Embed Video on Your Blog from iPhone via Facebook

Congratulations! You filmed your first video blog post! Now you want to get it from your phone into your blog, easily. There is actually an easier way than YouTube, if you don’t already have a channel set up over there – Facebook! You already have an account and they allow you to embed the HD video right from your profile.

To get the video onto Facebook from your iPhone, first check out last week’s post about How to Lose 10 Pounds Instantly When Filming Yourself with an iPhone. The part about uploading to Facebook is about 2 minutes into the video.

Here is the video I shot on the iPhone. Please ignore the large nose.

And here is a video tutorial about how to actually get the video from Facebook onto your blog. And also please ignore my serious cold and heavy breathing.

The video contained every excruciating detail, so here it is in 4 simple steps:

  1. Upload video from iPhone to your personal profile in Facebook
  2. Change privacy setting on video to public
  3. Copy embed code from video (click embed video tab in Facebook)
  4. Paste embed code into HTML tab in your blog

It’s so easy, even I could do it! No editing necessary. Just talk into your camera, upload to Facebook, and embed.

It’s true. The WeddingMix app by Storymix Media can help you instantly lose ten pounds! Most people don’t do themselves any favors when they film themselves on an iPhone, Flip, or laptop. Why? They are setting the camera at an angle that shows every detail of every chin!

Watch this video tutorial (filmed using the WeddingMix app of course) to see how to lose 10 lbs. You’ll also learn how to use the front-facing camera on the iPhone. Feel free to download our app and try out the demo project for free. Next week we’ll learn how to embed video to your blog using the app.

4 Simple Tips to Take Good Video in the Dark with iPhone or Flip Camera

Boo! Afraid of dark video from your iPhone or Flip Camera? Try these simple tips to take better video in low lighting situations.

1. Move into a lighter area. Duh!
2. Turn your subject to face whatever bit of light there is. If the light is behind them, the camera will adjust and make them dark (as can be seen in this video tutorial).
3. Use the light from your iPhone as a video light. While certainly not the quality of what a videographer can do, it works a whole lot better than pitch blackness.
4. Get an uplighting kit for your event. This is available from many DJs and lighting companies and will transform your venue (aside from providing more light for your video).

Happy filming!

How Can You Make a Video with Dark Flip and iPhone Video Clips?

Here’s a question I am asked all the time… “How can you possibly make a decent video from the dark clips on an iPhone or Flip video camera?” My question back would be “Did you literally film this event in a sealed room with no light source?” Other than that, there’s a lot we can do. Watch this tutorial video to see the magic Storymix can work on your dark clips.

[Editor's Note: YouTube decided to mess with me. They took it upon themselves to seriously lighten the entire movie. The "before clips" were so dark that you couldn't make out the faces at all.]

Ok, but those clips at the end weren’t perfect! True. But that may have been your friend whom you haven’t seen since your senior year of college. He flew 2000 miles to make it to your wedding. You really want to cut that clip because it’s a little dark? What if that was a clip of your Grandma singing the song she used to sing to you as a little kid? And this was her last family event? Are you really going to leave it on the cutting room floor?

Stay tuned next week for tips on how to shoot video in dark lighting situations.

The Myth of the Shaky Video From a Flip Camera or iPhone

One of the questions I’m frequently asked is “isn’t the video shot by your friends on an iPhone or Flip shaky?” Check out today’s Tuesday Tutorial (short) video to see why that simply isn’t true – well unless you really do have the wedding jitters. :)

Don’t miss my flub about 2/3 of the way through. Feel free to make fun of me in the comments below.
