Don’t Ever Ask THIS Person to Film Your Wedding Video

I’m asked all the time, “who do I ask to film my wedding?” Or, more specifically in the case of Storymix, “who should hold the cameras?” As you could see from the video tutorial, most guests will be filming anyway, so finding SOMEONE… anyone… isn’t a problem. But who should you NOT ask?

Well, I asked my sister, a seasoned filmmaker. Love her and glad she got video… but… bad idea. She was very used to directing actors. Check out this clip from our first dance.

Theoretically, most people will know not to interrupt your first dance. As you can see, we were kind of in our own little world, so the dancing continued.

Little caveat, I’m not saying not to hire a seasoned videographer or cinematographer who films weddings. They know how to stay in the background. :)

Little caveat #2, after years of crying that I had no video from my choreographed first dance, I’m incredibly grateful to have found any video at all. Don’t want to sound like a brat. Oops. Too late. :)

The Myth of “Putting Your Guests to Work” | DIY Wedding Video

DIY Wedding Video can be so incredibly personal and so much fun… and yet… aren’t you putting your guests to work when you ask them to film your wedding video? Watch the video tutorial below to learn the truth behind the myth. As you watch, feel free to do a shot every time I say “um”, you’ll be pleasantly wasted by the end of 10 minutes!

The funny thing is that when we were featured on ABC evening news last spring, what do you think they called the feature? Putting Your Guests to Work!

Tell me something, when you go to weddings, do you ever see people taking photos and video? I thought so. Do you think anyone begged or paid them to do this? Nope. They just love taking video. What do they do with it? At best, they put it up on Facebook. The bride almost never gets a copy. Ugh, and what good is it to get an email with a video attachment? The video file is soooo tiny that you can’t do anything with it.

WeddingMix allows your friends who love taking video to actually contribute to your wedding video. They can use the app to take video with their iPhone and still post it to Facebook, but YOU get a copy of the HD version of the video files as well! Or, instead of using their own flip camera, they can use ours. After the wedding, you simply send the cameras back in the prepaid mailer. No need to try and get your friends to burn the video files to a disc and mail to you! And best of all, you get an edited wedding video in the end.

So, when should they take video? As soon as you place your order, you can send them a login code, to contribute clips to your wedding video right from their iPhone. Why would they do that? Well, what about getting video from your trip to try on dresses? Or the cake tasting? Or rehearsal dinner? If you’re really adventuresome, you can include clips from the bachelorette party.

Wait a minute! But aren’t I putting a lot of pressure on my friends to get the “perfect shot” and make sure they don’t miss anything? You want your guests to have fun. This is a party after all. If it’s that important to you that your video be absolutely perfect, then you should probably hire a videographer as well. We work with plenty of brides who have both a videographer and WeddingMix. This will give you the peace of mind of knowing that you can actually hear all your vows. And your guests can concentrate on the fun stuff, like telling embarrassing stories about you for your wedding video. :)

How will my friends know what to video? We ship a card with video tips and a list of fun interview questions with every camera order. If you simply can’t wait, you can download the tips using the link on the upper right of this page.

How to Embed Video on Your Blog from iPhone via Facebook

Congratulations! You filmed your first video blog post! Now you want to get it from your phone into your blog, easily. There is actually an easier way than YouTube, if you don’t already have a channel set up over there – Facebook! You already have an account and they allow you to embed the HD video right from your profile.

To get the video onto Facebook from your iPhone, first check out last week’s post about How to Lose 10 Pounds Instantly When Filming Yourself with an iPhone. The part about uploading to Facebook is about 2 minutes into the video.

Here is the video I shot on the iPhone. Please ignore the large nose.

And here is a video tutorial about how to actually get the video from Facebook onto your blog. And also please ignore my serious cold and heavy breathing.

The video contained every excruciating detail, so here it is in 4 simple steps:

  1. Upload video from iPhone to your personal profile in Facebook
  2. Change privacy setting on video to public
  3. Copy embed code from video (click embed video tab in Facebook)
  4. Paste embed code into HTML tab in your blog

It’s so easy, even I could do it! No editing necessary. Just talk into your camera, upload to Facebook, and embed.

How to Hold a Camera or iPhone for a DIY Wedding Video

Ok, I know this sounds like a “duh” moment, but the question really does come up a lot. Hopefully everyone knows not to put their fingers over the lens, so I won’t talk about that. But I see people send in sideways video sometimes, so I thought it might help to talk about how to hold the camera.

Think about it this way, when you watch tv, are the videos taller than they are wide? No. When you watch TV do they have black bars along the side of the video? No. So why do people sometimes hold the camera or iPhone that way when shooting wedding video? I think it’s because brides and grooms are taller than they are wide. Duh, again.

No worries, we can fix it on your feature length wedding video, but it does take a little longer to get back to you, and doesn’t look quite as good. Here’s a little video tutorial I created to show you the right way to hold a camera for your DIY wedding video.

How to Create a DIY Wedding Video using an iPhone and Cameras

You spent the past year designing every detail of your gorgeous wedding… and you want to remember all the details on your 10th anniversary. So you decided to take the plunge and do a DIY wedding video. Storymix just made it whole lot easier – with our WeddingMix iPhone app.

Sure, anyone can take video on an iPhone, but if you want to create an edited wedding video, that’s another story. First of all, you get to have the joyful adventure of hunting down all the clips from your friends. They put them on Facebook, but how do you actually get them on your computer? Let’s say they email them to you (after you remind them for 6 months). Now the clips are too small for you to edit and have it look good. That’s why Storymix is offering our app.

You, your friends, family… everyone can begin shooting video as soon as you place your order. You can even set up a shot list in the app, so they know what scenes are most important to you. All the clips can be uploaded right to your WeddingMix project AND to Facebook.

flip camera iPhone wedding video

Ok, now here’s where it gets cool. You can ALSO get the HD cameras for the wedding (the app is free with any camera package). Why would you want cameras if you already have the app? Because it’s much easier to take long clips on a camera. So, if you want your entire first dance, ceremony, toasts, etc. the cameras definitely come in handy. In fact, you can even take a camera on your honeymoon.

After the wedding, everyone uploads their clips and you send back the cameras in our prepaid mailer. All the clips, get added to your storyboard online. Then you get to direct your movie. We do the editing, but you get to be the director. You can tell us which scenes are most important, what titles you’d like, etc. Then Storymix takes care of the hard stuff- the actual editing.

As you’ll see in the video below, now you can begin filming your wedding story as soon as you say “Yes, I’ll marry you.” As soon as you order any of our WeddingMix packages, you can download the app and begin taking video clips to include in your final wedding video. In fact, your fiance can even include the proposal!

Storymix makes it really simple to get the wedding video you want, told through the eyes of those who love you the most. Download the WeddingMix wedding video iPhone app today to try it out for free.

Why to DIY Your Wedding Video

In this kickoff of Tutorial Tuesdays, I wanted to give you an overview of HOW to DIY your wedding video. What?! Why in the world would you want to DIY a video????? So, before beginning with the HOW, I thought we should begin with the WHY.

When you think about wedding video, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Is it cheesy? Is it soooooo long that you’ll never watch it? Or perhaps you have that vision of gorgeous wedding films… like those produced by Hardeman films.

Whatever your vision of the product, there’s something else you may want to consider. How are you going to remember your wedding 10 years from now? The photos are awesome. But, there are some memories that just come to mind better in video. Like your dad’s toast. Or how about your sorority sisters doing a reenactment of spring break while you’re posing for pictures?

When you DIY your wedding video, you also get to include whatever you want in the final video. Why not include the bridal shower and honeymoon? How about your own Say Yes to the Dress?

As for the cheesy factor, that’s where your own creativity comes into play. If you don’t want a two hour video, don’t direct it that way.

And if you want a wedding cinema film, by all means, you should get a pro videographer. A pro video is really a different type of video than what you can get with a DIY service like Storymix Media. If you want to hear your vows clearly, or get that cinematic style where you are in focus and everything else is fuzzy, you’ll need the expertise of a gifted pro. There’s really no reason not to do both, though.

But, you know what, don’t believe me. Believe Laura, our awesome bride from Queens, NY, “Having the chance to re-live our favorite moments over and over again means more to us than you can ever imagine. Every time I watch it, I can’t help but smile!” She loved the concept of DIY wedding video so much, that she decided to work with us after her wedding. You can find her here on the blog. :)

We Love Love

Want to know who is behind the scenes at Storymix Weddings? The co-founders are two people very much in love. We love love. We loved our wedding. And we want to give everyone the opportunity to remember all the cool behind the scenes fun from their own wedding.

Our wedding was a DIY extravaganza. From the dress to the cake. Lots of DIY love. That’s us.

I know I’m biased, but I just think my husband is a looker. And I’m particularly blessed, because he just gets better looking with age. Gotta love it!

Our wedding was pretty big. Over 200 friends and family. Lots of inebriated antics went on that night while the bar band Killer Flamingoes played on. We have some awesome photos of that evening – none of which are appropriate to show on the blog. :)

But I sure wish we had video of my piggyback ride around the dance floor. Or my husbands old boss jamming with the band. Or one of the groomsmen playing kissy face with one of the bridesmaids, when they had just met that morning. Let’s just say our wedding was the best party I’ve ever attended. And I sure wish I had a video of it. Imagine a camera in the hands of your best friends. What crazy, fun moments would they be able to capture?

So, My Flip Wedding is our gift to you. A DIY wedding video. It’s our way of saying – enjoy the memories.

Avoid Wedding Vendors Who Bash Others

You know it’s a trend – wedding pros are taking notice

I was directed to a post today on a videographer’s website warning brides to stay away from products like My Flip Wedding.  It would appear that she is worried about losing market share.  Many wedding vendors are very concerned about the growing DIY trend for weddings.  But it’s time they realize that things have changed and couples want to incorporate personal elements into their wedding and DIY is a big part.

We love videographers. We love wedding video. So much so, that we want every bride to have the opportunity to have a wedding video to view on her anniversary. Whether with us or a high-end videographer; we simply want everyone to be able to cherish their wedding videos.  But if wedding videographers are going to bash our products and call the couples theme choice cheesy, well, we need to set the record straight.

First of all I would like to thank them for choosing Storymix Media’s My Flip Wedding as one of the products reviewed.  It is nice to see that we’re being recognized as the leader in DIY wedding video.

It seems strange that a videographer would prefer a couple have no video keepsake of their day if they can’t afford thousands of dollars for their services.  Currently less than 30% of brides preserve their wedding day on professional video. The number of post wedding brides that RECOMMEND others get a video of their wedding is 98%. My Flip Wedding is a solution for the brides that want an affordable wedding video. Not everyone can simply afford the $3000 or more to hire a videographer like the post’s author.

Do You Think This is Cheesy?

Even brides that do hire a professional videographer are using our service as a way to capture the more intimate moments that only those closest to them would notice. Far from cookie cutter standard shots, these are the up close and personal memories shared among family and friends.  Most of today’s couples also are interested in a video with modern effects and production values, not the same old boring thing they saw in their parent’s VHS version.  Of course every couple has their own taste, which is why we offer 10 wedding theme editing styles to choose from.  You can even design your own theme and our editors will create it!  Take a look at the video the pro bashed and decide if you think it’s cheesy.  It might not be for you, but the couple Marc and Amy sure loved it and that’s what really matters.

Wow, A Wedding Vendor Who Shows Their Pricing!

The poster took the time to go through My Flip Wedding’s easy to use ordering system and selected nearly every add-on available, bringing the total for the order to $813. While that was a very nice package, our most popular package is actually $355. It also throws a light on the transparency in our pricing; nothing hidden or added on to the back-end. Isn’t that refreshing?

storymix media cheap wedding video ordering system

One aspect missed in the post were the other wonderful ways our clients have been using their My Flip Wedding packages. By having the cameras for 3 days (as opposed to 6 hours) they are capturing the parties before the wedding like the rehearsal dinner or the ladies trip to the spa. They are putting together video guest books. They are even extending the experience by taking them on their honeymoons.

Will You Really Edit the Footage?

Yes it is true that people can buy their own Flip cameras but too often what happens is they end up with hundreds of clips to watch on their computer; no story, no cohesion. Part of the real magic in videos is in the editing process.  With our Storyboard feature, couples can choose the scenes that mean the most to them and then have our editors use them to tell their story.  Or simply rely on our editors to create it all for you.

You might want to tackle the editing yourself (if you have 60 hours of free time) or ask a friend to do it (if you really don’t like them much).   Consider what the final result will be compared to our fully Apple Certified Pros. Additionally, unlike some video companies, we have a large library of legally licensed music that our editors expertly incorporate into your video.

Will a video shot on a Flip type camera by an amateur ever replace a $3400 or more professional video? Not likely, but then that isn’t our intention. But I would suggest staying away from any vendor who likes to bad mouth others.  The story of My Flip Wedding is to give today’s couple a new and different set of tools to capture their day.  As this trend grows, we’re excited to be part of couples’ ability to enjoy and share their wedding for generations.

Can You Get Your Groove on in the Afternoon? Yes!

Cypress and Brandon were recently married in a beautiful outdoor ceremony that focused on the important aspect that their faith has in their marriage.  Originally, they did not include video in their plans.  That is, until they took advantage of the SmartBride Boutique Princess for a Day Contest.  As Cypress said, ”We hadn’t planned on having any video of our wedding.  Storymix Media made it possible for us to capture our wedding from a guest’s point of view.”

So, what do they think about including My Flip Wedding for their big day?  ”Wow!!!  I love it (especially the beginning)!  :-)  Now we have a great video to remember it by!”

The happy couple chose to personalize their video clips themselves in the online Storyboard. They are really looking forward to reviewing everything that was shot and picking the scenes that Storymix’s Apple Certified Pro editors will use for their final video.

Many people think about a religious ceremony and afternoon reception with one word – BORING!  Well that’s certainly not the case for this wedding.  Take a look at their video and see how much fun everyone had at Cypress and Brandon’s reception.

DIY Wedding Video Tip | Don’t Leave Out the Best Part – Give Me Some Handles!

You know we love DIY Wedding Video.  It’s the main feature of our company.  We also know that not everyone who picks up a video camera understands how to get the best possible footage.  So we are always looking to provide tips and tricks so you end up with the best possible wedding video.  Today we’re going to talk about adding handles to the video scenes that are shot.

Handles?  What the heck are you talking about?

Handles are that little bit of video at the beginning and end of each scene that our software program uses to create transitions.  If you don’t include  a second or two before or after the main part you want to show, you’ll end up with an abrupt change or cut out part of the scene – yikes!  Our Apple Pro Certified editors can work magic with your DIY video, but we can’t defy the laws of physics (yet!).
So what can you do?

• First, tell your video shooters to look at this post and others on this blog for quick and easy tips.
• Two, explain what a handle is and ask them to hit the start/stop button with enough time before and after what they are trying to record.
• Three, if you’re really ambitious, have them look at this post for a detailed explanation of handles with videos that shows what a difference they make.
• Four, relax, even if all the videos your guests take aren’t perfect, that is part of the charm with DIY wedding video.  It focuses on the personal, intimate, and spontaneous moments of your big day and not everything will be according to script.
Here are a couple of easy tips to use that will automatically cause your video scenes to include handles:
• If you’re asking a question of someone, tell them to smile before and after they speak.
• Pan into and out of the focal point (but don’t overdo it!).
• Start recording before important moments are about to happen – the vows, first dance, toasts, etc.

Happy shooting!
