Real Wedding: Evan + Kristin – Bainbridge Island Wedding with Dog Wedding Party

Evan and Kristin were married on July 23, 2011 at the Fettermans’ Farm in Bainbridge Island, WA. Their adorable dogs, Toby and Copper, were part of their wedding, and we love the use of ipads in the ceremony!

Evan, Kristin and their guests then danced the night away to the sounds of the band, Action Slacks. Watch Evan and his mom break it down to Signed, Sealed, Delivered.  Evan tells us, “the band had my mom’s Ipod, which had You Are the Sunshine of My Life on it, which she specifically requested to dance to. They clicked it one too many times, which played Signed, Sealed, Delivered, and we decided to just go with it. :)

We Love Love

Want to know who is behind the scenes at Storymix Weddings? The co-founders are two people very much in love. We love love. We loved our wedding. And we want to give everyone the opportunity to remember all the cool behind the scenes fun from their own wedding.

I know I’m biased, but I just think my husband is a looker. And I’m particularly blessed, because he just gets better looking with age. Gotta love it!

Our wedding was pretty big. Over 200 friends and family. Lots of inebriated antics went on that night while the bar band Killer Flamingoes played on. We have some awesome photos of that evening – none of which are appropriate to show on the blog. :)

But I sure wish we had video of my piggyback ride around the dance floor. Or my husbands old boss jamming with the band. Or one of the groomsmen playing kissy face with one of the bridesmaids, when they had just met that morning. Let’s just say our wedding was the best party I’ve ever attended. And I sure wish I had a video of it. Imagine a camera in the hands of your best friends. What crazy, fun moments would they be able to capture?

So, My Flip Wedding is our gift to you. A DIY wedding video. It’s our way of saying – enjoy the memories.

See how we can help you capture and enjoy your big day for a lifetime. Learn more about DIY affordable wedding video at our website or feel free to give us a call at 800-831-1649.

A Wedding Tragedy Averted

Percy and Hollis got married on Saturday night in New York.  They were really excited to have our Flip cameras in the hands of their friends and family to capture all of the special moments from their day.  But if not for the extraordinary efforts of a few strangers all of those memories would have been lost forever.

The Back Story

We shipped the 5 cameras on May 27th through FedEx, which should have been plenty of time to arrive at Percy’s apartment before the wedding.  FedEx estimated the delivery date as June 1st.  Normally, that would be the last we’d have to do until we received the cameras back.  Not for this wedding.  We checked the tracking status on Tuesday May 31st and the estimated delivery was pushed back to June 2nd.  Still no problem.  When we checked on June 2nd the new delivery date was Friday.  Not ideal, but still a day before the wedding and it had arrived in New Jersey so it was close.

The recovery begins

We were alerted by FedEx at 2pm (3pm in NY) on Friday June 3rd that the shipment had not been delivered because nobody was home when the driver arrived and they would not leave it at the door of an apartment.  Our customer service specialist immediately sprang into action to get the cameras to Percy in time for his wedding.

The first attempt was to contact FedEx.  After several conversations over the course of an hour with various levels of management we were told that there was no way to contact the driver (hello this is 2011 not 1973) and since it was shipped ground the next attempt would be on Monday morning.  We asked if the driver could leave it at a FedEx Office store for pickup.  Could it be left at the FedEx facility for pickup in the morning?  Could the driver try a second time and we’d make sure someone was home?  No, no, and no.  We even asked one supervisor what she would advise her daughter if she was in the situation.  When she replied, “I’d tell her she’d get the cameras on Tuesday.” we knew any more efforts with FedEx would only be wasted.

Best Buy fails, saves, fails, and saves

The next effort was to purchase five new cameras from a Best Buy close to Percy and have them ready for pickup.  After a quick search we contacted the nearest store and talked with a sales rep.  The first question was to find out if they actually had 5 cameras in the store as this was a concern since Cisco stopped making them about a month ago.  Yes they had them.  Yes they could have Geek Squad charge them.  And they could even deliver them.  Yes!  Of course all of this took quite a bit of time and explanation and was happening in the car as by this time our customer service specialist was on her way to the airport!  Everything seemed to be in order.  We contacted Percy, explained the situation, apologized for the late delivery, and thought the problem was solved.  Then we got a call from the Best Buy agent saying that our corporate credit card had been denied for fraudulent activity.  What?  We found out that they taken the card info incorrectly.  Then, without explanation, the sales rep refused to take the correct numbers or a new credit card.  Every time we called back we got the same rep who refused to connect us with a supervisor.  By now it was 5pm (6pm NY) and time was running out.

Shemeeka and Kevin to the rescue

Now I was in charge and decided to call another Best Buy.  This time we connected with Shemeeka and explained to her the entire story in as condensed a version as possible.  Shemeeka was very sympathetic and took real ownership of the situation.  She personally went and got 5 cameras and gave them to Geek Squad to start charging even before taking the order info.  After about 45 minutes going through the necessary steps (it required two separate orders, one for the charging and delivery) everything finally seemed set.  She even promised to have the delivery driver call me after dropping the cameras off at Percy’s.

About 15 minutes later, Shemeeka called us to say that the delivery company informed them that there was a 50/50 chance they’d be able to pick up the cameras because it was so late.  Shemeeka said she was saying a prayer for us and wished she could make the delivery herself but she does not have a car.  As you can guess, we heard from the delivery company about 30 minutes later.  Kevin called and said that no driver was close enough to get to the BestBuy before the store closed.

What now we thought?  After all the effort would Percy and Hollis be left without cameras?  I quickly explained the story to Kevin and asked if there were any ‘extraordinary’ means that could be employed.  He paused for a moment and asked if I could be placed on hold.  He came back and said that no drivers were available but he was driving near Percy’s apartment and would personally make the delivery.  Wow!  He explained that he had been the best man for his best friend and there had been a lot of things that went wrong during the wedding and wanted to help someone else avoid problems.  So, he said he’d call the Best Buy and tell them he would be picking up the cameras.

Still not easy

10 minutes later Kevin called back and said Best Buy corporate policy would not allow them to release the order to him because he was not actually a driver for the delivery company.  Oh man.  Thinking quickly I told him I was going to call Shemeeka and get back to him.  I called her and asked if we could simply cancel the delivery and designate Kevin as the person to pickup the order.  ”Sure”, she said, ” but the store will be closed by time he gets here.  Hold on.”  After a few minutes she came back and told me she convinced the security guard to hand the cameras to Kevin when he arrived.  Alleluia!

A happy ending

Finally, everything was set.  Kevin even called after he had the cameras in his hand.  Percy and Hollis passed the cameras out on the wedding day and here is what he sent us the next day.

“Thanks man. We had a blast last night and I am pretty sure we got tons of cool stuff on the cameras. I know there was drama with the original order delivery, but I am incredibly pleased with the way you handled it. I can’t wait to see the finished product.”

We can’t wait to see the videos either.  In appreciation for his understanding of the situation we are going to include the footage they capture during their honeymoon to Barbados.

Thanks

We are very grateful to Shameeka, Kevin, Percy, and Hollis for working with us to get the Flip cameras for the wedding.  It certainly makes one feel good to know how kind people can be even when they don’t know you and just want to help another person.

The moral of this story is that you may not always be able to trust the delivery service, but you can trust us to do whatever it takes!

Smokin Hot Bride

Back in March, we teamed with The Man Registry to introduce affordable DIY wedding video to grooms everywhere.  We ran a contest for a My Flip Wedding package and were blown away by the response . The winning groom was Kyle Fryman… and this is his wedding (My Flip style).  Ladies, if your man is giving you grief about having a video from your wedding, simply send them to this post and have them view the video and read the text below.

As you can see, My Flip Wedding is a different breed of wedding videography. As opposed to a weird guy running around with a camera and bright light, some of the footage is captured by your buddies (which means you’re guaranteed to get all of the offbeat moments that are going to make watching your wedding video a little more bearable year after year.) Additionally, all of the video clips  are provided online so the final product includes only the shots that YOU want.  In other words, your best man’s keg stand attempt and your sister’s embarrassing wipe out on the dance floor aren’t going to be left on the cutting room floor.

Kyle and his cigar smoking bride, Brittany, will certainly be sharing laughs as they look back on their big day. As she put it,

“we are so happy that the moments that would have long been forgotten, were caught on video. I think everyone had fun filming and being filmed and we can’t wait to see the DVD!”

To learn more about this groom-approved rage that is tearing up the wedding industry, check out the My Flip Wedding website and start building your package. Pricing starts at just $99.99 (which you’ll appreciate if you’ve already started pricing videographers).

Can You Get Your Groove on in the Afternoon? Yes!

Cypress and Brandon were recently married in a beautiful outdoor ceremony that focused on the important aspect that their faith has in their marriage.  Originally, they did not include video in their plans.  That is, until they took advantage of the SmartBride Boutique Princess for a Day Contest.  As Cypress said, ”We hadn’t planned on having any video of our wedding.  Storymix Media made it possible for us to capture our wedding from a guest’s point of view.”

So, what do they think about including My Flip Wedding for their big day?  ”Wow!!!  I love it (especially the beginning)!  :-)  Now we have a great video to remember it by!”

The happy couple chose to personalize their video clips themselves in the online Storyboard. They are really looking forward to reviewing everything that was shot and picking the scenes that Storymix’s Apple Certified Pro editors will use for their final video.

Many people think about a religious ceremony and afternoon reception with one word – BORING!  Well that’s certainly not the case for this wedding.  Take a look at their video and see how much fun everyone had at Cypress and Brandon’s reception.

What Will Your Guest Say? Find Out with a Wedding Video Guestbook

“Bears Will Win 10 Superbowls in a Row!”

At least that was the prediction made by a guest at Christie and Shane’s wedding when asked what the next 20 years held for the couple. You see, Shane is a coach for the Chicago Bears.

We’re always amazed at the creative things couples do for their weddings and how they use the cameras we send them for their DIY wedding video.  When superstar Chicago wedding planner Melissa Phillips of Simply Perfect by Melissa contacted us about using My Flip Wedding to create a Video Guestbook we were delighted at the opportunity.  She knew her couple Christie and Shane were looking for a twist on standard guestbooks.  What a great idea!  The forums and blogs are full of questions and different ways to make them something you’ll actually look at more than once.

Melissa’s plan was to take standard wedding video guest wishes and really get personal and fun responses.  The problem with sticking a camera in a person’s face and asking them to say something to the bride and groom is obvious – you end up with 35 people saying the same thing.  ”Congratulations, we’re so happy for you.  Have a great marriage.”  It gets really boring after the third time hearing it.  Melissa prepared a great list of 10 questions to randomly ask guests that would be sure to elicit personal responses and provide funny moments her couple could enjoy forever.

Take a look at how well the Apple Pro Certified editors at Storymix enhanced the footage from a low light setting to make it look it’s best.  But, it’s the audio that really makes the video great.  See for yourself how well Melissa’s idea turned out.  What questions would you want your guests to answer?  Read this post for a few suggestions to avoid boring comments.  And let us know if you think having a video guestbook from your wedding would be better alternative than the traditional book.

Listen and Learn! 98% of Brides Recommend Future Brides Video their Wedding

As we’ve found from talking with well over 100 brides, most are willing to share their wedding experiences. Wedding industry marketing firm Breakthrough Marketing, Inc. surveyed 500 brides, nationwide, to learn how brides felt about wedding videos.  Their result matched closely to what we’ve heard, but also indicated some other interesting tidbits.

An amazing 98% of surveyed respondents said that they would recommend future brides get a wedding video.

Given this result it is surprising to note that only 29% of these respondents actually used a professional videographer, while 98% hired a professional photographer.

A Friend with a Camcorder is Better than Losing Memories Forever

Additionally surprising was the discovery of a major shift in attitude about the importance of a wedding video…AFTER the wedding. When asked before the wedding to list their “Top Ten” wedding services, only a little more than fifty percent of respondents placed wedding videos on the list. However, after the wedding, that percentage jumped twenty five percentage points to 75%.  Brides who didn’t have their weddings captured by anyone, made up 38% of respondent brides. An obvious level of regret may be interpreted from the fact that sixty-three percent of these brides now either somewhat or strongly recommended that future brides hire a professional videographer.

Those brides who reported having a video expressed their belief that video is better at capturing a moment in time where family come together for a unique purpose. The wedding video then becomes a piece of family history that can be shared with family members not fortunate enough to be there and for future generations like children and grandchildren.

So, are you going to listen to the brides that came before you?

Or are you going to just ignore that little voice in your head telling you you’ll regret not having a video for the rest of your life?  Whether you use a pro, DIY wedding video like My Flip Wedding, or just have a friend get some footage, you’ll have those memories available to be shared and enjoyed forever.

Note: Results of this national survey, conducted by Breakthrough Marketing, Inc., are based on telephone interviews with 500 brides who were married in 2005. For results based on the total sample of brides, there is a 95% confidence factor that the margin of sampling error is plus or minus 4.75 percentage points.

Can We Really Dance? You Decide!

We were featured on a great blog for groomsmen gifts called Groom’s Advice about a month ago.  Reader Marc Stumbo thought a DIY wedding video was a perfect way to capture his wedding.  One of the wedding gifts from a group of friends was dancing lessons and getting all his and his wife’s moves on video suddenly became important.  Marc thinks the gift paid off, “the private lessons were enough to make us look like we knew what we were doing.”  Take a look at their trailer video below and tell us if Marc is right – or they need some more lessons!  We think they did great.

Marc and Amy were thrilled with both their first dance and the final video, “Amy and I both thought the My Flip Wedding service was wonderful.  It was so easy start-to-finish to make a video of our special day that we can now enjoy forever.  We especially appreciate that the video was shot by several family and friends rather than a hired videographer, so the entire project feels more personal than we expected.  Thank you so much.”

Take Marc and Amy’s advice and consider having a video of your wedding, whether it’s from a pro videographer, a friend, or using Flip cams from Storymix Media.  Of course with My Flip Wedding one of the great features is that you can decide how long the final video is by selecting the scenes included.  What we want to know is how long you think the ideal length is for your wedding video (assume you’ll also get all the raw footage too).
