3 Tips On How To Be A Penny Wise Bride and Not Pound Foolish

What’s the purpose of investing so much time, energy, money, and emotion into one special day . . . if it isn’t ”to throw the most incredibly fun party for your friends and family?”

“Survey Says…”

What your guests will remember about your wedding is: “the fun they had at your reception” – and that’s second only to food and drink.

The “noise” in today’s wedding market is so prolific that many brides take their eye off the “Prize,” that is, for everyone to have fun!

Consider that a wedding is nothing short of a well choreographed ballet requiring the skills, talent and expertise of project minded individuals – but not every bride is an experienced project manager. Now consider the choices coming at you, from all directions, all at once, and changing relentlessly. It’s no wonder some brides get anxious about “the budget.”

Don't pay your DJ less than a veggie trayBelieve me when I tell you: “I’ve seen the road to ‘happily ever after’ and it is strewn with tons of un-eaten broccoli and too many disappointed brides suffering buyer’s remorse.“

Being thrifty and having a “Vision” of a storybook wedding isn’t enough. But don’t worry; you don’t need a business degree to manage your wedding project. There are a few easy things you can do to make everything work to your advantage . . .

Tip 1

Put everything in perspective based on the impact and importance it has on the end-result. You want the biggest bang for your buck! Right? So, focus your resources on the things that contribute the greatest impact.

You may decide you want to include:

  • the veggie tray with ornately carved fruit creatures
  • the eccentric artisan cheese platter you provided during cocktail hour
  • the gracefully melting swan ice-sculpture..

Remember though, everyone is there to “Eat, Drink and be Merry” so those are the elements where your financial attention should be focused.

I’m not saying to omit ice sculptures or anything else – I’m just trying to help you keep it all in perspective.

Case in point: If you’ve ever watched 4 Weddings, you know that your DJ is worth more to the success of your wedding than raw broccoli or a block of frozen water that can’t even be added to a Rum & Coke.

When it comes to booking wedding vendors, the typical pecking order is: Church, Reception Venue, Photographer, Caterer, DJ/Band, Cake, Florist, Videographer, etc. Along the way, you are going to be challenged with numerous additional choices: Invitations, Dresses, Tuxedos, Honeymoon, Favors, Aisle Runners, Bridesmaid & Groomsmen Gifts, etc. It’s overwhelming and can quickly get out of control.

Hire A Cheap Wedding DJ and Lose Weight

To help you avoid getting to that point of sheer desperation, where you have an exhausted budget and seemingly never ending expenditures, and you’re resorting to typing “Cheap Wedding DJs” into Google, and now you’re losing weight from all the stress of worrying whether “Tom, Dick & Harry DJ” will even show up, let alone be any good . . .

Tip 2

Set reasonable budget expectations for those services you identified as having the greatest contribution to your wedding’s success. It’s all too easy to let minute details ambush and hijack your budget. Before you know it, all those little things quickly add up to hundreds of dollars.

Let me reiterate . . . no one’s saying forego signature details that personalize your wedding and reflect what’s unique about you. By prioritizing and allocating your budget to the “value-rich” services that ensure the WOW-Factor your guests are expecting, all those “details” that truly will enrich the whole experience will become obvious.

To help you set a realistic Wedding Budget check out: Cost of A Wedding. Not only can you get estimates for your overall wedding budget, but you can also refine them specifically to you local area, as well as focus in on individual vendor/service categories.

Keep in mind that “averages” are mathematical calculations that even out the highs and low for a series of numeric data and provide no insight to quality or value provided at that price.

Brides and grooms should always meet with prospective service providers and never select a service based on price alone – which leads me to my final point . . .

Raleigh Event DJ - Wedding DJ servicesTip 3

Don’t judge a book by its . . . price. Is “average” or “cheap” how you really want your wedding to appear? You deserve the best and you can have it too. You might be surprised what you really can afford when you begin by first focusing your budget’s attention on the things that genuinely make a difference.

You know better than anyone what you can afford and what you are willing to spend. But keep in mind that the old adages that have stood the test of time are often your best advice . . . “If it seems too good to be true then it probably is” and “You get what you pay for.”

A “Cheap DJ” is no bargain if no one has fun at your wedding.

When surveyed after their wedding, nearly 85% of brides wish they budgeted more for their DJ. Your DJ has a far greater impact on the success of your entire wedding celebration than to be simply thought of as someone who plays music for 3 or 4 hours.

We Love Love

Want to know who is behind the scenes at Storymix Weddings? The co-founders are two people very much in love. We love love. We loved our wedding. And we want to give everyone the opportunity to remember all the cool behind the scenes fun from their own wedding.

Our wedding was a DIY extravaganza. From the dress to the cake. Lots of DIY love. That’s us.

I know I’m biased, but I just think my husband is a looker. And I’m particularly blessed, because he just gets better looking with age. Gotta love it!

Our wedding was pretty big. Over 200 friends and family. Lots of inebriated antics went on that night while the bar band Killer Flamingoes played on. We have some awesome photos of that evening – none of which are appropriate to show on the blog. :)

But I sure wish we had video of my piggyback ride around the dance floor. Or my husbands old boss jamming with the band. Or one of the groomsmen playing kissy face with one of the bridesmaids, when they had just met that morning. Let’s just say our wedding was the best party I’ve ever attended. And I sure wish I had a video of it. Imagine a camera in the hands of your best friends. What crazy, fun moments would they be able to capture?

So, My Flip Wedding is our gift to you. A DIY wedding video. It’s our way of saying – enjoy the memories.

DIY Wedding Video Tip | Don’t Leave Out the Best Part – Give Me Some Handles!

You know we love DIY Wedding Video.  It’s the main feature of our company.  We also know that not everyone who picks up a video camera understands how to get the best possible footage.  So we are always looking to provide tips and tricks so you end up with the best possible wedding video.  Today we’re going to talk about adding handles to the video scenes that are shot.

Handles?  What the heck are you talking about?

Handles are that little bit of video at the beginning and end of each scene that our software program uses to create transitions.  If you don’t include  a second or two before or after the main part you want to show, you’ll end up with an abrupt change or cut out part of the scene – yikes!  Our Apple Pro Certified editors can work magic with your DIY video, but we can’t defy the laws of physics (yet!).
So what can you do?

• First, tell your video shooters to look at this post and others on this blog for quick and easy tips.
• Two, explain what a handle is and ask them to hit the start/stop button with enough time before and after what they are trying to record.
• Three, if you’re really ambitious, have them look at this post for a detailed explanation of handles with videos that shows what a difference they make.
• Four, relax, even if all the videos your guests take aren’t perfect, that is part of the charm with DIY wedding video.  It focuses on the personal, intimate, and spontaneous moments of your big day and not everything will be according to script.
Here are a couple of easy tips to use that will automatically cause your video scenes to include handles:
• If you’re asking a question of someone, tell them to smile before and after they speak.
• Pan into and out of the focal point (but don’t overdo it!).
• Start recording before important moments are about to happen – the vows, first dance, toasts, etc.

Happy shooting!

What Will Your Guest Say? Find Out with a Wedding Video Guestbook

“Bears Will Win 10 Superbowls in a Row!”

At least that was the prediction made by a guest at Christie and Shane’s wedding when asked what the next 20 years held for the couple. You see, Shane is a coach for the Chicago Bears.

We’re always amazed at the creative things couples do for their weddings and how they use the cameras we send them for their DIY wedding video.  When superstar Chicago wedding planner Melissa Phillips of Simply Perfect by Melissa contacted us about using My Flip Wedding to create a Video Guestbook we were delighted at the opportunity.  She knew her couple Christie and Shane were looking for a twist on standard guestbooks.  What a great idea!  The forums and blogs are full of questions and different ways to make them something you’ll actually look at more than once.

Melissa’s plan was to take standard wedding video guest wishes and really get personal and fun responses.  The problem with sticking a camera in a person’s face and asking them to say something to the bride and groom is obvious – you end up with 35 people saying the same thing.  ”Congratulations, we’re so happy for you.  Have a great marriage.”  It gets really boring after the third time hearing it.  Melissa prepared a great list of 10 questions to randomly ask guests that would be sure to elicit personal responses and provide funny moments her couple could enjoy forever.

Take a look at how well the Apple Pro Certified editors at Storymix enhanced the footage from a low light setting to make it look it’s best.  But, it’s the audio that really makes the video great.  See for yourself how well Melissa’s idea turned out.  What questions would you want your guests to answer?  Read this post for a few suggestions to avoid boring comments.  And let us know if you think having a video guestbook from your wedding would be better alternative than the traditional book.

Can We Really Dance? You Decide!

We were featured on a great blog for groomsmen gifts called Groom’s Advice about a month ago.  Reader Marc Stumbo thought a DIY wedding video was a perfect way to capture his wedding.  One of the wedding gifts from a group of friends was dancing lessons and getting all his and his wife’s moves on video suddenly became important.  Marc thinks the gift paid off, “the private lessons were enough to make us look like we knew what we were doing.”  Take a look at their trailer video below and tell us if Marc is right – or they need some more lessons!  We think they did great.

Marc and Amy were thrilled with both their first dance and the final video, “Amy and I both thought the My Flip Wedding service was wonderful.  It was so easy start-to-finish to make a video of our special day that we can now enjoy forever.  We especially appreciate that the video was shot by several family and friends rather than a hired videographer, so the entire project feels more personal than we expected.  Thank you so much.”

Take Marc and Amy’s advice and consider having a video of your wedding, whether it’s from a pro videographer, a friend, or using Flip cams from Storymix Media.  Of course with My Flip Wedding one of the great features is that you can decide how long the final video is by selecting the scenes included.  What we want to know is how long you think the ideal length is for your wedding video (assume you’ll also get all the raw footage too).

A Real Life Flipper | Andrea and Jeff Preserve a Marriage

My Flip Wedding in Action

Andrea and Jeff leave the church. See the person shooting with a Flip?

That’s right. You’re going to Flip over this one. Get it? Flip. Hehehe. Here is the real life experience of a happy couple that used our Storymix Media My Flip Wedding Video Package. So convenient… rent the cameras in pre-packaged mailers, have friends and family shoot the video, send back the cameras, receive a finished edited movie. You can even extend the rental to take the camera on your honeymoon!

Andrea and Jeff read our blogs about the value of video from your wedding, but didn’t have the budget for a high quality professional videographer. Rather than simply have a friend video their wedding and hand them some useless computer video files, they decided to go for the convenience of renting our Flip cameras and having us edit a beautiful movie for them.

Some things I really like about how they filmed this:

  • Andrea assigned people to either side of the ceremony site, one camera was near a speaker, so we used the audio from that one, but the video from both cameras
  • Lots of details – her “videographers” were thoughtful enough to capture many of the details of the day

Another benefit shown in the full-length feature was all the behind-the-scenes footage captured by the multiple cameras. One camera followed Andrea getting ready while another followed Jeff. Well wishes were captured by guests from both sides of the family.

After the wedding, Andrea shipped the cameras back in the pre-paid mailer. We uploaded her finished video for her approval shortly after that. Within a month of their wedding, Andrea and Jeff received the finished movie, along with the all the original video files shot by their friends. Oh, and did I mention this was all for way less than the price of an inexperienced videographer?

DIY Wedding Photography with Twist

Hopefully you have not considered buying disposable cameras to place on the tables at your wedding. If so, please stroll over to one of the major wedding sites forums and do a search to learn why it is such a monumentally bad idea (cost, time, terrible pictures).

Now you’ve probably hired a pro photographer who is going to do a fabulous job capturing you and your fiance on your wedding day. But what about the other events related to the wedding – rehearsal, limo ride, honeymoon, etc? And what about all the stuff your guests will be doing? Well with today’s technology you can count on hundreds and even thousands of photos (and videos) being taken on digital cameras, phones, and Flip cams.

The question is, how do you easily get ahold of all those great memories? Email? Facebook? Prints? While those can work (usually with a lot of time and effort hunting them down), many times the results are disappointing due to file size and resolution issues. Of course there are a lot of other free and paid options to use too. We think (okay, we’re biased) the best solution combines four important features:

1. Easy for your guests, with no log-in or passwords
2. Free full resolution downloads for you
3. Privacy – keep the stuff you don’t want your boss or grandma to see hidden
4. Enjoyment – turn the best moments into a slideshow keepsake you can watch every anniversary

So where can you find such an amazing service? Well look no further than Storymix Media’s Guest Memories photo and video service. Check out the slideshow from one of our happy couples. Katie and David had quite an extensive wedding experience that spanned two ceremonies (Illinois and California) with a honeymoon that took them to Brazil, Argentina, and Peru! Being able to include photos from all the different locations and turn them into a slideshow was a real plus. As Katie said, “Thanks, you’re awesome. I love the slideshow!” Enjoy their show and imagine what you could do with all the photos from your guests.

My Flip Bridal Shower

From the minute you get engaged there are many memorable moments shared by you and your family and friends. So why do most couples only capture memories from the actual wedding day and perhaps honeymoon? Instead of having random pictures and videos from various moments during your engagement, consider creating a ‘wedding experience’ keepsake. The idea is to highlight all of the best memories in one enjoyable video that tells a story of your engagement, wedding, and honeymoon. Using Storymix’s Custom DIY Wedding Video is a perfect way to combine everything in a fun video that you can enjoy forever. You can also create a photo album or photobook with pictures, but you’ll miss out on the sounds and emotions only video can capture.

Your bridal shower is one of those memorable moments and there are many reasons you should capture those memories. First off, you most likely won’t be involved in the planning. Second, you get to hang out with your friends and family and relax for a few hours (which you need!). Third, you get to open gifts. The shower is also one of the moments that video shines. Hearing the laughter and warm wishes from everyone will become even more precious as the years go by and people move, pass away, and no longer are part of your everyday life. When you combine this footage with pictures of you and friends at bridal shops, video clips getting ready on the big day, and photos of your first kiss as husband and wife you’ll be able to experience and re-live your wedding in a special way that will touch your heart every time you see it.
